How did you first decide to be involved with Belmont University?

From the moment we stepped on campus, we felt a sense of community, and our first interactions with development staff got us excited about the school. After experiencing the campus and meeting the people, we knew we wanted to have a relationship with Belmont.

What about your experience as Belmont parents encouraged you to give?

We felt like we had a relationship with the development staff, the faculty and the students. When we were on campus people recognized us, and for us those relationships made all the difference. Additionally, through our experiences with our daughter Kate, we’ve learned that this is a community that challenges, mentors and develops students. Belmont expects students to help their fellow man, not just compete. As parents we want to support that environment.

Why are you supporting scholarships and the theater department specifically?

The greatest gift we can give our children is education. Kids should be able to graduate without the burden of loans and student debt and say yes to the opportunities they receive in college rather than being limited by financial constraints.  Even the college choice process often comes down to money. Students enroll in the school they can afford. That’s why we named our scholarship the Lackey Family Freedom Scholarship.  Scholarships provide “freedom” from these limitations.

Specifically, we are supporting scholarships within the theater department because we believe in the importance of preserving the arts. The arts foster community, interconnectedness and understanding, and by supporting students in these areas, we are supporting the people who will create, build community and make us laugh.

Why would you encourage others to give to Belmont?

There is so much joy in giving. We feel good about what we have been able to do, and we hope that other families with the means will also consider helping. When we look at our charitable giving, we look for where we can make the biggest impact, and we believe Belmont is one of those places. It’s not a monumental change to the campus, but to one student, over the course of four years, our scholarship can make a real difference.
